South Korea's leading personal mobility (PM) sharing service platform, ‘GCOO', has launched its shared electric scooter service in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, Africa.

Ghana, a key developing country in Africa, is currently facing worsening air pollution alongside rising incomes. Despite the consistent rise in income levels, marked by an economic growth rate exceeding 5% according to World Bank statistics in recent years, the surge in fossil fuel-based vehicles like motorcycles is deteriorating the air quality.

In response, GBike Co., Ltd., the operator of GCOO, aims to provide a solution to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions by running its eco-friendly shared PM service starting at the University of Ghana, a leading national university, in Accra, Ghana's capital. Simultaneously, the service aims to improve mobility rights in developing countries with insufficient public transportation infrastructure by offering a reasonably priced service.

This service expansion has been achieved through a collaboration with Herringbone Co., promoting ESG management, including environmental consulting in Africa. Herringbone plans to use its extensive local network to help GCOO's eco-friendly shared PM service take root in the community.

Jongsoo Yoon, CEO of GBike, stated, “Ghana is one of the countries in Africa experiencing remarkable economic growth, but it's also facing significant air pollution issues. The GCOO service will not only enhance the mobility convenience of students and local residents but also contribute to environmental protection and social value realization by reducing carbon emissions.”

In addition, GCOO has already successfully launched its services in global markets such as the United States, Thailand, Vietnam, and Guam. It plans to expand its eco-friendly mobility services to several developing countries, including Africa, to participate in solving global environmental issues.
